E-Petition System

Did you know the House of Commons has a petition system? This is a new feature of the federal government and it allows Canadian citizens to create and sign official petitions online. Here are the nine steps it takes to go from creating your petition, to having it tabled for a government response:

  1. Create a petition account

  2. Write and submit a draft

  3. Support of five Canadian citizens or residents of Canada

  4. Publication on the website for 120 days

  5. Preliminary review by the Clerk of Petitions

  6. Sponsored by a Member of Parliament

  7. Certification by the Clerk of Petitions if there are at least 500 signatures

  8. Presentation in the House of Commons

  9. Tabling of a government response
